I mean, perhaps some of you have seen this meme floating around on social media:

WHOA!!!!! Can you even imagine?!?!?! This meme makes me laugh but it also hurts a little bit, too…with a splash of nausea…(okay, A LOT and a 20-ft tidal wave SPLASH!!!) All I can say is if this meme came true, THAT WOULD NOT GO OVER WELL AT ALL. 😱😖😑😲😳😫😜

It honestly does feel like 2020 is the longest year that we have had in a very long time. Or it could be the longest year EVER, like 10 years rolled into one, depending on how your 2020 year has been so far…I feel like it has been layers upon many layers of varied chaos, from the minuscule to the obscene and catastrophic, and all having significant, eye-opening, informative, and crushing effects in so many different ways – – that “kinda” sums it up for me. There has just been so much devastation this year, especially. And I do not wish to harp on the plethora of: excruciating circumstances/hypocritical moments/baffling decisions/innumerable travesties/colossal tragedies/despicable actions/unfathomable suffering of so many beings…the list could go on and on. Though I have dedicated a few previous blog posts to my thoughts on some of these monstrous issues that I have mentioned because I believe that they were and still are too important not to talk about and acknowledge.

2020 can most certainly be recorded as a truly 💩💩💩-show kinda year. Like, maybe partially how it would feel if we were forced to walk across a vast and seemingly-unending expanse of burning quicksand – – a struggle to take any forward-progressing steps because we just keep sinking into the ground with feet seemingly on fire, trying to claw our way onward. Yet we still muster on, doing our very best to hang onto our wits, our rationale, our sanity, and our cleverness to keep trying new things – – to figure out what is and isn’t working in this brand new landscape. Yet it seems that with every slow, agonizing step that we take, there are consistent new threats and obstacles appearing that we must face and factor in alongside the insanity, like sand piranhas, people-eating plants, and murder hornets. (Remember them????!! 🥺) And on and on it has continued in this slooooow and anxiety-ridden crawl…..

This scenario sounds like it might fit into the world of 2020, perhaps?? For some, 2020 has been challenging but not this quicksand-analogy-level of challenging. And for others, this quicksand analogy may sound really accurate OR maybe still not challenging enough for what they have experienced this year….

Definitely watch where you step!!!

For the vast majority of us, let’s just say that 2020 has not been very pleasant, comfortable, peaceful, or worry-free to say the LEAST.

AND YET…….we have almost made it. Through the uncertainty, through the paranoia, through the trepidation, through the fear and the anxiety and the hopeless moments and the quarantining and the social distancing and the hand washing and the masks because we care about other people……we have almost made it to celebrate a new year on this planet.

And I fully realize that even when 2021 gets here, this long list of chaos, unpredictability, heart-wrenching woe, and, of course, the masks, the hand washing, the social distancing, and the quarantining will be far from over. It’s going to be a long road to recovery because it is much worse now than it was during the initial wave last March…and things often have a way of getting worse before they get better.

STILL, we deserve to take this moment and acknowledge how far we have come. To be proud of all of the steps that we have taken to protect our loved ones and our communities and/or how we have done the very best that we could in the potentially hardest and most convoluted times of our existence. To feel a sense of accomplishment that we are still standing….or sitting….or laying down…or recognizing that it is enough that we are here and just being. And also recognizing all that we have done in order to manage, to survive, to push through, and/or to handle the onslaught of punches, to the degree that 2020 has brought forth.

If you haven’t heard this within the past 24-hours, please allow me to say:

I believe every wonderful being deserves to hear this!!! (Yes, YOU!!!) Many, many, many times. Even every day as a reminder to yourself.

AND another important concept to keep in mind, through any and all trials and tribulations that we face and endure:

The hardest times are where we grow the most, learn the most about ourselves, gain the strength and awareness to overcome the obstacles in front of us, and conjure the inner feistiness and the determination to combat and tackle those obstacles. All of these things are also indicative of 2020 and it’s affect on us. TRUTH.

I would also like to take a moment to congratulate, cheer, and do a happy dance for all of the good, exciting, wonderful, unexpected, and joyful moments that still have happened while 2020 was discernibly downward spiraling. CONGRATULATIONS!! HOORAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!

There has still been so much good this year: people standing up for each other and taking care of each other; people finding ways to support each other and their communities; sweet babies coming into this world; creative proms and graduations that still took place even with no school and social distancing; romantic wedding proposals and the small, beautiful weddings that were still able to take place; the ever-advancing creative edge that 2020 has inspired because of all of the constant changes; the new dreams that were created; the new businesses that developed; the moves that took families to new, safe locations OR to the lucky couples who purchased a glorious new home; and the love and compassion of epic proportions that has manifested especially because of the events of this year.

Plus, there is finally this magnitude of respect for our superhuman healthcare workers, teachers, and all the essential workers who have always held this country together but it couldn’t be more apparent this year. I’m so sorry that it had to come to this level of COVID destruction for you to be acknowledged, vehemently appreciated, and honored. I’m so sorry that there are people in this country that still refuse to wear masks and socially distance, refusing to understand and to care how exhausted and overworked you are. Thank you a million times over for your service, how you have buckled down to handle the immense challenges that have come your way, and how you still continue to risk your own lives to support, help, care for, and save other people, regardless of their stance on masks and the severity of this virus. To call you “superhuman” is still an understatement.

Lastly, to end my blog post for today, I would like to continue the happy acknowledgements and the praise and extend a ginormous HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all of those who celebrate!!!! And often, they help so much!!! Hey, did you know that gratitude (and laughter, too) is known for being the best antidepressant out there because it has the power to change our life by shifting our perspective and allowing peace and happiness in?? Spoken and explained by Daniel Amen, MD, a physician, psychiatrist, and teacher that you can find on YouTube. He has done a number of speaking events, like the one at TedxOrangeCoast about “Change Your Brain, Change Your Life.” The talks of Daniel Amen are fascinating and worth the listen – – and the more you look, the more you will realize that many of the big names and the successful beings that are masters, mentors, and gurus in their fields follow a gratitude practice every day. It goes to show that choosing a state of gratitude is super powerful stuff!!!

Finally, with love and appreciation:

I thank YOU for your time, your support, your wonderful comments when you see fit, your sense of humor, and your presence!

Keep going strong, (or just going and doing your very best), remember that you’re doing better than you think you are and that you got this, and have an amazing and THANKFUL rest of your week!!!!

Then, on to December we go!!!
